Construction of Mozambique section approximately 218 km of the 400 kV Mozambique-Malawi transmission interconnector.

DESCRIPTION

The project entails the construction of a 218 km, being 142 km at Mozambique side and 76 km at Malawi side,  400 kV (initially to be operated at 220 kV) power line from Matambo substation, in Mozambique, to Phombeya, north of Malawi's commercial capital, Blantyre. The first assignment will involve the design, supply and installation of the 400 kV overhead transmission line from the Mozambique-Malawi border to Phombeya substation including construction of the landing bay at 400kV Phombeya substation related to the Malawian side. The second assignments include extension/ upgrading of Matambo substation form 220 kV to 400 kV and upgrading of SCADA systems (EDM) related to Mozambique side.

COMMENTS ON FINANCE:
The Mozambique-Malawi interconnection Agreement that will guide the interconnection of the two power systems, was signed in Lilongwe on April 3, 2013 witnessed by the Mozambique and Malawi Head of States. Following the signature of the Agreement, Mozambiq
Inception report for environmental studies was approved. Update of existing studies including ESIA is being done to consider 400 kV voltage level. SAPP PAU hosted and participated in an EDM – ESCOM negotiation meeting in Johannesburg. All the agreements were reviewed. Technical studies including ESIA are being updated by a consultant.
